Facts you need to know about tennis elbow

Tennis elbow is a common term we hear now and then, and it is commonly associated with sport injury. Tennis elbow, also referred as lateral epicondylitis, is a condition caused by overuse of elbow. The people affected with tennis elbow are those who have overused their elbow through any kind of sport activities or shoulder exercise.

Tennis elbow is caused by the inflammation of tendons that connects forearm muscles on the outside portion of elbow. When a person overly exerts forearm muscles, the muscles and tendons get damaged and causes pain.

Anatomy of elbow:

There are three bones that make up the elbow: the upper arm bone called humerus and two bones in the forearm called radius and ulna. Beneath the humerus there are bony bumps called epicondyles and the bony bump on lateral side of elbow is referred to as lateral epicondyle. The elbow is held together by muscles, ligaments and tendons.

Symptoms:

The symptoms of tennis elbow progresses over a period of time, initially the affected person will experience mild pain and over the period of time, the pain frequency increases. The occurrence of tennis elbow is not related to the presence of any injury in a particular area.

If you are concerned that you might have tennis elbow, look for these signs:

  • You will experience a feeling of constant pain or burning sensation on the outer surface of elbow
  • Lack of firm grip strength

To be certain that you have tennis elbow, you will experience difficulty with activities associated with applying strain on forearm, like difficulty shaking hands, holding a racket and so on.

Diagnosis of tennis elbow:

Your doctor will enquire about the development and progression of symptoms, to detect whether you might have tennis elbow. Then the doctor will ask you to straighten your wrist and fingers by providing certain amount of resistance to your arm, and if there is a pain, it is an indication that you might have tennis elbow. The doctor might enquire about medical history like a nerve disease or rheumatoid arthritis that could be also an indication of tennis elbow and it is important to keep your doctor informed of these conditions.

Medical tests to diagnose tennis elbow:

  • X-rays
  • Electromyography (EMG)
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

 Non-surgical treatment:

Following are some of the non-surgical treatment methods used for the treatment of tennis elbow:

  • Steroid injections: Steroids like cortisone is a highly effective anti-inflammatory medicine.
  • Brace: The wearing of brace on back of forearm can relieve symptoms of tennis elbow by resting muscles and tendons.
  • Physical therapy: Certain physical therapies such as ice massage, muscle stimulation techniques or ultrasound are known to improve healing.

The non-surgical treatment methods may provide around 80-95% of success rate in relieving the tennis elbow pain.

Surgical treatment:

If symptoms do not disappear even after 6–12 months of non-surgical treatment, then the patient has to undergo the one of the following surgical treatments:

  • Arthroscopic surgery: Through a small incision, the miniature instruments are used to fix the tennis elbow condition.
  • Open surgery: It is the most common approach to repair tennis elbow; however, the patient needs to take few weeks of complete rest  post surgery.

Prevention of tennis elbow:

  • Avoid applying excessive strain/pressure on your wrist and elbow compared to the rest of your arm. Always aim to apply equal amount of strain/pressure on wrist, elbow and larger muscles of upper arm and shoulders.
  • If you are suffering from tennis elbow, make sure you do not exert your elbow by applying stress on tendons. Refrain from activity that causes strain on affected area.
  • Before you play a sport that involves repetitive arm movements, perform warm-up exercise which involves gentle arm stretches that could prevent injury.
  • It is always recommended to use only light-weight equipments to improve grip and avoid excessive strain on tendons.
  • Take the advice of physiotherapist to increase the strength of forearm muscles.

Workplace wellness: A solution to optimum employee health and productivity

With increased competition at the work place, stress levels of employees have increased over the years. According to the recent survey, about 51% of Indian population has experienced work-related stress over the past year in work place.  The main reason for such high percentage is that the employees are unable to get the release of endorphins – a feel good chemical present in the body – due to lack of physical activities.

Based on the study published in 2014 January issue of Preventing Chronic Disease by Centre of Disease Control, out of 37,626 employees about 25% are reported to be obese. Sedentary lifestyle like sitting in the office for long hours and lack of physical exercise are responsible for obesity. The ill effects of sedentary lifestyle are:

  • Slow flow of electricity in legs
  • Decreased metabolic rates
  • Shutting down of fat-burning enzyme

A workplace wellness program is essential for employees to maintain rigid health for longer and healthier life. It also increases the happiness and productivity levels of employees by way of:

  • Increased self-esteem
  • Reduced stress levels
  • Increased stamina
  • Increased physical fitness levels
  • Weight reduction

With regard to quality of life, the benefits are:

  • Increased recruitment power
  • Decreased levels of chronic illness
  • Increased employee relation

Different ways of promoting wellness in workplace:

An organization can strategize on various methods to promote wellness in workplace, and it could start with healthy catering sector like displaying an array of healthy fruits and vegetables. A small step might lead to commendable outcomes in the prevention of chronic diseases.

The methods in which we can promote workplace wellness are:

Promote the knowledge of preventive care:

Construct workshop demonstrations that encourage preventive care, emphasize on the importance of healthy eating and foods that help maintain healthy cholesterol levels. Encourage employees to regularly use the gym and also indulge in Yoga and Meditation.

Encourage healthy living awareness in workplace:

Promote the concept of healthy eating habits and also lifestyle health, employers can conduct seminars on stress management, prevention of chronic disease, steps to keep travel sickness at bay and so on.

Build a healthy workplace environ:

A work environment with healthy nutrition and exercise facilities is not sufficient to create a completely healthy work atmosphere. There will be a section of employees, who engage in unhealthy habits such as usage of drugs and tobacco smoking that is detrimental to health, and there are also some employees who indulge in unhealthy eating habits. Bearing all these factors in mind, seminars on weight management, stress reduction and tobacco cessation will be highly beneficial.

There has been a decrease in quality of life over the years contributed mainly by competition in the work place, long working hours, lack of physical activities and increased costs of living, which in turn increases the stress levels of employees. Wellness programs that contribute to both mental and physical well-being are essential to strengthen the productivity levels. Nowadays most companies are equipped with gym, indoor sports facilities, meditation and yoga centers, etc. which helps the employees to physically engage in such activities during work hours. Moreover, it would be more beneficial if a team of healthcare experts are present to monitor the stress levels of employees periodically and offer stress reduction packages.

Proton therapy effective in treating esophageal cancer

Esophagus cancer is more common in men than women, and the most commonly known risk factor is being obese or overweight, excessive smoking and alcohol consumption.

There are two kinds of esophageal cancers namely, squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.

Symptoms of esophageal cancer:

  • Coughing
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Difficulty with swallowing called dysphagia
  • A deep feeling of pain and burning sensation on chest

How proton therapy works on esophageal cancer?

Proton therapy in esophageal cancer works differently from conventional X-ray radiation therapy, and the outcome of the treatment is much more effective. When proton therapy is applied in higher dose of radiation, the outcome in controlling and managing cancer has been successful and it reduces damage to healthy tissues. Conventional X-ray radiation has not  been effective in controlling cancer, because it is difficult to detect the pattern of irradiation; therefore, it can damage healthy tissues along with the cancerous cells.

Proton therapy is conducted using a machine called synchrotron or cyclotron, which speeds up protons. The speed of proton is related to amount of energy and physicians measure the depth of proton transmission in the body based on energy of proton. Once proton reaches the desired location in the body, they emit radiation dose directed to the tumor without destroying healthy cells.

In the conventional radiation therapy, the cancer treatment is done using radioactive energy rays called photons. For a photon to target cancerous tissue, the radiation has to pass through normal healthy tissues to reach cancer cells, and in the process both healthy and cancerous cells get damaged.

Proton therapy uses sub-atomic particles called protons, which accelerates at the range of 93,000 miles per second, where the proton is separated from atom. The particles move at high speed when high radiation dose is administered, destroying cancer cells with minimal damage to healthy tissues.

What to expect in proton therapy session?

Proton therapy is mostly done in an outpatient setting, which means the patient does not need to source hospital admission. The number of sessions conducted is dependent on the type and stage of cancer. When a high radiation dose proton therapy is administered in 1–5 sessions, it is called stereotactic body radiotherapy, and a single large radiation dose proton therapy session is called as radio surgery.

Effectiveness of proton therapy on esophageal cancer:

Proton therapy also known as proton beam therapy is a kind of medical procedure that involves administering of proton beams to irradiate diseased tissue. It is widely used in treatment of cancer, and the outcome of proton therapy in the treatment of esophageal cancer has been more effective based on experimental procedure carried out at the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine. The results revealed lesser intensity of nausea, loss of appetite and blood abnormalities.

Medical Tourism- Myths and Facts

Using foreign medical professionals for your treatments can be apprehensive initially. But once you get to know the benefits of getting treated at a different country you would recommend medical travel to your friends and family too, the most common benefit sought for… cheap and economic treatments. One has to be careful however, before deciding to travel abroad for medical reasons. Level of quality when it comes to medical services may not be uniform across countries. Infrastructure, professional expertise, cost of treatments may all differ from country to country. Choose your options carefully before venturing out of your country for a medical advice or procedure.  We have briefly discussed below some common myths associated with medical travel to ease out your apprehensions.

Myth: Travel costs will be hard on your savings money-bag-black-white-line-art-coloring-book-colouring-svg

Fact: The inexpensive treatments can subsidize your travel costs. The money you save on your medical procedures can be used for your travel expenses and your accommodation. On top, you get an opportunity for a vacation while you heal. It is best to consider your budget, available treatment options in the home country before you decide to travel abroad. You can choose a country closer to your home country, if the travel costs are bothering you too much.

Myth: Low cost of treatment is equivalent to low quality service low quality servcice pic

Fact: Cost of the medicines can be as little as 10% of what you pay at home. But it doesn’t mean that it is inferior. A lot of these medicines are manufactured by the same companies that sell the product in your home country. These are just sold at lower costs in developing countries. While abroad, avoid buying pharmaceuticals on the streets or on the internet considering the obvious risks. Stick to your physician for the prescribed treatment.

In terms of the quality of materials and equipment, they are as good as any medical equipment would cost. The savings however, come from the labor and not from the quality of the products used. Medical facilities in some countries are in fact comparable to five-star hotels. The standard of nursing care and personal attention in most medical travel destinations is very high in. Some of these destinations have access to newer techniques and treatments that are not yet available in developed nations.

Myth: Foreign doctors do not speak English toungue tied

Fact: English is the primary language of science. And therefore, all educated people in the world have decent English skills and so do the medical professionals. When in doubt, just ask.

Myth: Foreign medical professionals lack quality and training training icon

Fact: It would be wrong to assume that foreigners have inferior training. Chances are that the doctors, dentists and other medical care professionals at your home country are foreign trained and are immigrants. The fact that they choose to not migrate and practice in their home countries doesn’t necessarily mean that they are less trained or less educated. In fact the different philosophies of therapies of these foreign practitioners might be actually superior.

Myth: Medical tourism is all about cosmetic surgery ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Fact: Though some medical tourism facilitators heavily promote cosmetic surgery packages, it is not the only kind of medical procedure you get  overseas. Most commonly sought medical treatments abroad are eye surgeries, dental procedures, preventive diagnostics, orthopedic and joint procedures, fertility treatments, spine surgeries and alternative health.

World Hepatitis Day- Time to take a look at your liver

World Hepatitis Day commemorates the birthday of Dr. Baruch S. Blumberg, who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine for identifying the hepatitis B virus and developing its preventive vaccine. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of discovery of the hepatitis B virus. The discovery helped save hundreds of millions of lives from there on. Presently, about 400 million people are living with hepatitis B or C worldwide. About 1.4 million people die from viral hepatitis annually. The shocking part is all these deaths are preventable. Let’s take a brief look at this disease and get to know about the ways to prevent it.

What is it?

Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by the hepatitis viruses.

What causes it?

Five types of hepatitis viruses cause this condition of the liver. They are type A, B, C, D and E. They cause acute or chronic diseases of the liver which may lead to cirrhosis, liver cancer and even death.

How to identify acute liver infection from a chronic one?

Acute infection may or may not show any symptoms. Symptoms may vary from yellowing of skin and eyes, dark urine, extreme fatigue, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Chronic infections often lead to cirrhosis. It may also result in liver failure or liver cancer. Hepatitis B and C are the major cause of chronic hepatitis in millions of individuals across the globe.

How do people contract this infection?

hep transmission 1The most common mode of transmission of hepatitis A is through consumption of contaminated food and water. Lack of hygienic habits such as no hand washing before eating or after using the restrooms are the common causes of hepatitis transmission. Hepatitis E  is transmitted through contaminated blood.

Hepatitis B, C and D are transmitted through infected blood and unprotected sexual contact. Contaminated blood transfusions, organ transplants or invasive procedures like injections, tattoo procedures with reused needles, and mother to new born transmission also spreads this deadly infection.

How to prevent this infection?

hepatitis prevention

Preventive measures differ from one hepatitis virus to the other. It also changes with the mode of transmission.  However, using basic hygienic practices, safe sex and avoiding contact with infected blood can curb the transmission of these viruses. Vaccination is another key preventive measure against these viruses. Outreach programs to increase awareness can mobilize healthcare stakeholders and educate patients.

As part of the World Hepatitis Day, several health organizations are taking initiatives across the world to create awareness about viral hepatitis, to adopt better prevention programs and for better treatment access . Let’s all join hands in creating a world free of hepatitis one step at a time.

Young athletes… stay in the game!!!

 ray-vector-pattern edits

Sport is one of the most common recreational activities which is associated with numerous benefits to the participating youth. Its benefits include improved cardiovascular fitness, bone and muscle health and reduced risk of obesity. Researchers suggest that youth participation in sports improves social well-being and most importantly their psychological health. Sports and exercise are also often associated with improved academic performance and healthy behaviors. But, participation in sports also comes with the risk of injuries to the athletes. It is important to take these into consideration as youth sports account for substantial morbidity and cost. With intense training, frequent competition and early single sport specialization, injuries and burn-out have become common. It is often seen that the most common type of sports related injuries is due to overuse of a body part when participating in a particular sport. These overuse injuries require lengthy recovery periods and may result in long term health consequences.

The RICE treatment

RICE stands for Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation. This process will minimize  damage, reduce any swelling, limit inflammation and restore blood flow as soon as possible. However, any injury involving swelling, deformity or any loss of function should be seen by a doctor ASAP.

Rest

  • The degree of rest depends on the extent of injury
  • It is better not to use the injured area for a few days until evaluated by the physician
  • Use crutches if there is a limp while walking

Ice

  • Ice should be applied directly over the injury
  • Start icing immediately post an injury. You can continue for 10–20 minutes and repeat every 1–2 hours for the first few days
  • Crushed or cubed ice, frozen peas all have the same effect
  • Do not sleep with ice on the injured area

Compression

  • Use a compression bandage or stocking when possible to minimize any bleeding or swelling
  • Start wrapping from the bottom of the injured area and move upwards
  • It is best to leave toes and fingers exposed
  • Do not apply compression too tightly
  • Look for numbness and discoloration, and loosen appropriately
  • Do not sleep with the wrap

Elevation

  • When possible elevate the injured area above the level of the heart. This way it is easier for any swelling to escape

Prevention

Although, being in sports is associated with physical risks it is ideal to prevent these injuries. The most potential ways of prevention are pre-season physical exams, readily available medical services, appropriate coaching, adequate hydration and proper equipment.

The doctors at Texas Medical Concierge are readily available to diagnose and treat all sport-related injuries of youth and adolescent athletes. Our primary and only focus is to return these hurt athletes to their sport safely and quickly. Contact www.texasmedicalconcierge.com to know about our services.

Wellness at workplace

mental illness edit 1

Mental health requires serious attention of organizations as it is a significant health issue affecting businesses globally. We might avoid talking about mental health at workplace but it is important considering its cost to employers.

A healthy workplace values and supports its employees, providing them a positive workspace attitude. Regardless of what work one does or where he or she fits in the organizational hierarchy, an active engagement of oneself in the organization with a sound emotional health holds the key to a healthy and happy business.  A happy workplace also ensures increase in productivity, improves presentism and also can lower the total medical costs.

Employees undergoing emotional issues face incredible challenges at the workplace, where they tend to get misunderstood and underutilized. Organizations however, cannot afford to be indifferent to this situation when there is already a shortage of skilled manpower across the globe. Misconceptions about cost- effectiveness of the treatment and a general wariness about all things related to mental health are the major blocks for organizations from addressing the emotional health issues of their employees.

The high cost of mental illnesses can be mitigated with a timely diagnosis and intervention. Appropriate workplace with psychiatric management improves the overall wellbeing of an employee and increases his or her productivity. Below are some data to support this statement:

  • A 1.7:1 return in investment was achieved by Abott for having conducted a depression screening program[i]
  • About 86 % of employees  showed improved work performance after being treated for depression [ii]
  • A Harris Poll showed that 80% of patients reported high levels of efficacy and satisfaction after being treated for mental illness[iii].

Things to be done at your workplace  to promote mental health:

  • Encouraging active employee participation in decision making
  • Defining  set roles and responsibilities for employees
  • Encouraging work-life balance
  • Workload management
  • Continuous skill development and learning
  • Conflict resolution practices at work place
  • Effective employee recognition

4 common myths on second opinion- Busted!

????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

A patient might want a second opinion for innumerable reasons. It can be merely for reassurance or for clarifying his doubts about a particular treatment or a condition. No matter how genuine the reasons being, there are various myths associated with seeking a second opinion.

  • Myth: Patient is confused and unsure

Fact: All a patient wants is to make sure the diagnosis is correct and that the treatment plan suits him. He wants to make an informed decision in choosing his treatment options. Moreover, it allows the patient to explore his options.
